Now that the cold winter weather is upon us, it is time to think about what this means for the skin on both our face and body. A major function of the skin is providing a barrier to the elements, so it is no surprise that the cold weather can affect our skin quite deeply and drastically. Below we have addressed some major winter skin complaints and given ideas for how to alleviate and prevent them from occurring in the first place. If you are still not sure how to fix your skin, why not book in for a free skin assessment with our skincare therapists.
Dryness
This is the most common ailment that our skin suffers from at this time of year. The continual exposure to heating at this time of year results in a dryer skin, not only on our face but also in areas such as the hands, elbows, knees and feet.
Solution: It is important to take into account the change of season when purchasing your regular skincare products at this time of year. You may need to change to a moisturiser which is more nourishing than your normal product for the winter period. Therefore it is important to consult your skincare therapist so that your skin can be analysed and the correct product prescribed. This is just as important for your body as it is for your face.
Try Pevonia Dry Skin Care Cream for the face, featuring Pear Seed Extract and Royal Jelly which are nourishing and calming. For the body, Burts Bees Body Butter with Cocoa and Macadamia Nut is the perfect solution along with Burts Bees Nourishing Body Wash with Milk and Shea Butter.
The perfect in salon treatment for dryness is Pevonia’s Anti-Free Radical Facial, which contains Hazelnut Oil and Vitamin C to nourish and protect the skin.

Dehydration
Dehydration is a problem all year round, but more so in winter. Daily exposure to heating plus the fact that we tend to drink less water this time of year both contribute to major dehydration of the skin.
Solution: An increase in daily water intake will assist in not only hydrating the skin but giving you a healthier body as well. Also try to minimise your exposure to high heater temperatures where possible. Ensure that your skincare products are hydrating, an excellent skincare ingredient is Hyaluronic Acid, which increases water retention in the skin. Pevonia Phyto Aromatic Mist is a great product to help hydrate throughout the day, simply spritz the product over your face when your skin is feeling parched.
The perfect in salon treatment for dehydration is Pevonia’s Elasto-Firm facial, containing Elastin concentrate. Elastin is hydrating and has the added benefit of tightening and smoothing the skin.

Redness and Sensitivity
Sudden exposure to the cold can cause redness in the skin, especially for those who suffer already from a skin condition known as Rosacea. Rosacea typically is characterised by redness in the cheeks and nose, and can sometimes be accompanied by acne breakouts and dilated capillaries.
Solution: Try to keep the skin cool and calm, avoid excessive alcohol and spicy foods which can exaggerate the problem. Also ensure that you try to avoid very hot showers, as the heat can cause any sensitivity to become worse. A soothing and calming product such as Pevonia Sensitive Skin Care Cream, containing Lavender, can help to strengthen the skin and capillaries.
The perfect in salon treatment for sensitivity is Pevonia’s Plantomer facial, which contains Propolis to soothe, heal and strengthen the skin.

Dullness and Pigmentation
A build up of dry skin during winter can cause your skin to look dull and lifeless. Winter is also the perfect time to address any pigmentation issues, as sun exposure is at a minimum.
Solution: It is important to exfoliate your skin once a week, to keep any dry skin on the surface to a minimum. It is also a good idea to invest in a product containing Vitamin C, such as Pevonia Vitaminic Concentrate. Vitamin C is brightening for the skin and the Vitaminic concentrate is also extremely nourishing and hydrating. Now is also the time to invest in salon treatments such as Microdermabrasion, which will help to brighten the skin and also address any pigmentation on the skin by providing a deep exfoliation.
The perfect in salon treatment to brighten is Pevonia’s Luminous ‘C’ and ‘Sea’ Facial, which contains Vitamin C to brighten and rejuvenate the skin.

Dry Lips
Winter is the worst time of year for dry, sore, chapped lips. Cold wind can cause cracks and redness surrounding the lips as well.
Solution: It is important to maintain moisture in the lips, and as hard as it is, try to avoid licking your lips as this makes the problem worse. Regular use of a good, nourishing lip balm is essential, and Burts Bees Replenishing Lip Balm is the perfect solution. This lip balm contains all natural ingredients including beeswax to replace lost moisture as well as soothing any redness and soreness.
